In 1976, Pantego Christian
Academy students made their first trip to New Braunfels. Frau K (Glenda Keilstrup)
took a group of her German folk dance troop to Fredericksburg, and Loujuanna Lyons took
the Spanish club members to San Antonio. After two days in their respective cities,
the two groups met at New Braunfels for another couple of days of fun and education!
Both groups visited the historical spots in New Braunfels, including the Sophienburg
Museum. At the museum the students learned how New Braunfels was settled and what
influence the Germans have had in Texas history. The following year, the language
students once again made their triangular journey, finishing their trip again in New
Braunfels. When the time came for the third trip, PCA students who were not members
of the German or Spanish clubs made a fervent bid to join the travels. The
Administration decided to make the trip a jr. high trip, and all those students in 7th and
8th grade, who had a good behavior record, would have the opportunity to go directly to
New Braunfels, with a side jaunt to San Antonio.
The activities still included the historical stops at the
museum and German Sunday houses. After a couple of years, the only students required
to take part in the "educational" activities were the 7th graders or students
who were new to PCA.
When we added 9th grade, that class was added to the
group. As the size of the group increased, it became more difficult to accommodate
the large number of students at the small museum, and that requirement was dropped.
10th and 11th graders made the trip only one year. After that it was decided to keep
the New Braunfels trip for the 7th-9th grade only.
The trip has remained a
reward for PCA students demonstrating good behavior throughout the year, a time for
students to get to get closer to each other and to their teachers and the staff.
It's a time for staff bonding, truly a reward for the staff as well. Several
"legends" have grown over the years, and some activities have changed for
various reasons, but many things have remained a tradition - including evening
praise time, the whipped cream battle, a day at Schlitterbahn, "cabin time", the
jumping rock, Frau K, and the incredible hospitality of John and Rita, owners of the
Heidelberg Lodge.
Frau K retired after the 2001 trip, but PCA and New
Braunfels continues with dedicated teachers and staff. For many students, the times
in New Braunfels are part of their best memories of PCA.
