Activities, activities, and more activities!
Camp Thurman's Day Camp program has been changing and growing "actively" in recent years!
Each year brings new action to the day's schedule, and six years
ago our
"Screamer" Zip Line was extended to four lines, stretching from one side of the
camp to the other. Designed for the older campers, this confidence builder remains a
favorite! Added five years ago was the 9 element low ropes challenge course, giving all ages a chance to develop team cooperation and individual participation.
A few seasons past we installed the Tarzan's Swing and the K-Klimb cargo net climb and the K-Klimb Zip for
our mid-age campers. Just three years ago we installed the Roxburgh's Ropes Challenge in the Sky, and if you were here last
season, you played on the many new elements at Kidron Valley, dodged
balls in the Slap Dodge Ball Arena, and enjoyed skits at the newly
renovated Marketplace stage.
To take advantage of these many activities, each group of 10 to 12 campers has its own schedule throughout the day. In most cases, no more than 2 groups will
be at an activity at the same time. Activities include the
40-foot-tall zipline, Power Pole,
Tarzan's Swing, K-Klimb, low ropes challenge course, swimming, archery/shooting
ranges, group games, crafts, free play at the
Jordan Gully with free swinging ropes and rope bridges, harnessed activities like cable walking
or pole crossing, scavenger hunts, and climbing walls. Younger
campers enjoy the Water Wagon, petting zoo, dress-up time, and
sandbox.

Swimming - twice
daily, once in the morning and again in the afternoon in each of the great swimming pools
- Euphrates Fountain, Sea of Galilee, or Red Sea. Campers who want to swim in the "deep
end" of the pools are required to pass a swim test to show proficiency. Campers who
choose not to take the test or do not yet pass the requirements, will wear a
bright-colored, lightweight, fast-drying cloth vest as an identifier, so that the four
lifeguards and several counselors will be easily aware when a non-swimmer might be close
to water too deep for his/her abilities.
Low Elements - Low elements such as spider
web, islands, TP shuffle, team wall, and wild woozy provide
challenges to each group in creativity, cooperation, and problem-solving. |
|
 |
 |
|
Archery and Shooting Ranges
- Bullseye targets and moving objects give the campers a chance to develop a skilled eye
and steady hand. BB guns and age-appropriate archery bows are the instruments.
Climbing Walls - Two walls with differing patterns and varying difficulties. The campers
are safely "harnessed" and "belayed" as they face the fun and
challenge of climbing twelve foot walls.
Ropes Challenge Course - Low ropes and high ropes, 3
skill levels bring new high adventure experiences to campers of all ages.
Tarzan's
Swing - Giant two-man pendulum requires "team pull"
to set the swing into motion.
|
Kidron Valley/Jordan Gully
(Ropes, zip lines, cargo nets across a creek bed) - Play Tarzan and Jane, discover the
thrill of tight rope walking, net crawling, and free swinging.
Power Pole - 25 feet high in the air, safely
"harnessed" and "belayed," yet facing the still challenging "Leap
of Faith" from atop the pole to a trapeze bar. A stimulating feat for ages
9 and up.
Screamer Zip Line - four lines,
this more than 300 ft long zip line reaches from the ropes course area all the way across camp
to the Kidron Valley area. For ages 10 and up.
K-Klimb
Cargo and Zip - two-sided, 12 and 20 ft high cargo
net with fireman's pole and twister slide. Zipline from
the 20 ft platform, for ages 6 to 9. |
|
 |
 |
|
Games - Capture the
Flag, Basketball, Frisbee Golf, Counselor Hunt, Fire Truck SoakDown, Scavenger Hunts,
Softball, Soccer, Slap Dodge Ball and more. Join other groups, other counselors in fun and competition.
Crafts - New crafts each day, designed for all ages,
both boys and girls.
Skits/Songs/Puppets - Our campers are divided into two
groups, giving the younger 4-7 year olds an opportunity to have songs and skits more
appealing to their own age group, with puppets and joyful music! The older campers are
entertained and taught at the traditional MarketPlace with skits, camp songs, and stories. |
