Remembering Ray “Chester” Mitchell

Ray “Chester” Mitchell

Serious when he needed to be, but mostly smiling and welcoming, Ray was one of our most memorable Camp Thurman staff members. Serving as counselor and activity supervisor in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, his booming voice, bear hugs and mischievous attitude were his trademarks. He helped create our first “high ropes” activities and set the tone for activity counselors. Ray moved to a full-time position at Pantego Christian Academy in 2003, working with the computer classes and school network and also as coach.

The CT field where campers play soccer and kickball, traverse over on the zipline, and stage Friday morning antics has held his camp name for many years – Chester’s Field. We will be forever grateful for his contribution to this ministry.

Please join us in praying for his family – wife Glenda, son Caleb, and daughter Rebecca (CT counselor Encore). He will be greatly missed! If, as a camper or staff member, you have memories of Ray, please send a note to info@campthurman.org, and we will share it with our staff and his family.
